Marseille Short Break: Add-on - Calanques hike with a local guide

  • Take a trip outside the city to discover the incredible natural landscapes of Provence
  • Spend time with a local English/French speaking guide, to get a local perspective on what makes this place special
  • Learn how the fragile ecosystem is being protected, and visit in a respectful way
  • Take a refreshing dip in the turquoise waters of Les Calanques
  • Enjoy some early morning views (and the cooler weather) and make the most of your time in Marseille

How this tour does good: "We participate in the cultural and economic enrichment of local communities and contribute to the positive image of the destination. We want, during the activities, to make our visitors aware of the ecological threats that weigh on the creeks and thus give additional meaning to the walks. Finally, we campaign for the preservation of the site by participating in waste collection campaigns organized by various associations."

Join your local guide and a small group for a guided half-day hike amongst the stunning landscapes of Les Calanques. Exploring with a guide is the best way to use your time, making sure you take in the best viewpoints while also learning about the heritage and preservation of the area.

Choose between the calanques close to Cassis (a small town accessible by frequent train in around 25 minutes from Marseille station) or those around Sormiou, on the outskirts of Marseille (accessed by bus/metro from the city centre).

Distance: 6.8km

From your guide: "This is about offering you an experience, more than just a walk, a mix between a tourist visit, an activity in the middle of nature and a discussion with a friend who wants to tell his city by putting more people and relationships at the center."

Cassis - 13260 Cassis, France

Option 1: Port-Miou, Port-Pin, En-Vau - Mediterranean Fjords

Departing from Cassis, you will begin by exploring the calanque of Port-Miou . 1400m long, it is home to a marina and conceals a rich heritage: former place of exploitation of a limestone quarry, underground river... all of which will be mentioned to you.

Always along the coast, you will continue until you reach the Calanque de Port-Pin , marking the entrance to Marseille territory! This winding creek is home to a pretty cove of pebbles with turquoise waters...you can, if you wish, take a dip in its refreshing waters during a break.

It is from here that we will begin to gain a little altitude, which will gradually take us up to 90m above sea level, to the view point of En-Vau , revealing its beach buried between the high cliffs…

Option 2: Sormiou - Authentic Calanques

The hike begins at the bottom of a remote district of Marseille, enclosed in the hollow of the hills…. Quickly we will sink into the Provençal scrubland by a path at the bottom of the valley while gaining a little altitude.

Arrived at the pass, we will walk on the ridge which will reveal several successive points of view over the scale of the massif, the city of Marseille and its symbols. From up here, the picture of the Mediterranean Sea, its islands and the turquoise blue waters of the creeks is unbelievable!

We will then descend gradually to the cove of Sormiou to discover all its jewels, its history and its stories! It will also be an opportunity to take a break and, should you like, cool off in its crystal clear waters, before going up the valley.
